Tritons ready for national runs
Iowa Central golf coach Kris Graewin is in for a hectic and busy next several days.
But he would not want it any other way.
Graewin will lead the Triton women into the NJCAA Div. II Championship beginning Tuesday from the Ol’Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. That tournament runs through Friday when he packs up and prepares to bring the Iowa Central men to their championship in Plymouth, Ind. starting Tuesday, May 19.
Both squads earned at-large bids to the tournament after the women had a pair of individual qualifiers from districts in Okira Quintero and Syeda Laiba Shah.
Once all of the district tournaments were completed, a committee selected three women at-large teams and six men.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and consistent play they’ve had all year,” Graewin said of the selections. “Our ladies had a bit of a tougher spring due to injuries, but we are almost fully healthy for the national tournament and looking forward to showcasing what we can do.”
Joining the Tritons in the women’s team race will be ICCAC rivals Des Moines Area and North Iowa Area, Mesa, Shelton State, Wallace State, Jefferson State, Southern Union State, Florida Gateway, Roane State, Murray State, Carl Sandburg, Rend Lake, Jacksonville and Northwest Mississippi.
Shelton State holds the top spot in the latest NJCAA team rankings, with the Tritons coming in at 13th. They have three tournament titles on the resume along with second and third place finishes.
Quintero is ranked 48th overall and Shah is No. 58.
Kirkwood, Northeast and DMACC also qualified as a team for the men’s tourney, with Black Hawk, Highland, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Hinds, Mott, Marian-Ancilla, Murray State, North Central Missouri, Heartland, Illinois Central, Walters State, Roane State, South Mountain, Mesa, Shelton State, Wallace, Calhoun, Jefferson State, Median and Southeast rounding things out.
Mississippi Gulf Coast is the No. 1 team entering the meet, as Iowa Central is ranked 16th overall with five tournament wins and two more runner-up finishes. Francis Lockwood is the highest rated Triton at No. 8 overall.
“The men played well all spring, but slipped up a bit in the district tournament,” Graewin said. “However, the resume they were able to put together throughout the year propelled them into the national tournament.”
Ivanna Becerra-Diaz became the first-ever NJCAA Div. II individual women’s golf champion last year, leading Iowa Central to a third place finish as a team. That was the first national tournament split into three divisions and marked the highest team finish for a Triton squad and the first individual champion.
“We feel like we have a chance to compete for All-American positions in both men’s and women’s tournaments and see if we can bring home some hardware, as well,” Graewin said. “This time of year is fun to look back on last year’s national championship experience with Ivanna.”
