Thanks Twin Lakes

To the editor: There were155 people registered for this year’s competition in the 13th Annual Half-Olympic Distance Triathlon, 6th Annual Duathlon and 2nd Annual Youth Triathlon: eight teams (22 people), 65 adults in triathlon, 23 in duathlon and 45 youth. Our youngest registered participant was 6 and oldest was 68 and average age was 39. 52% of athletes were female and 48% were male. The participants represented ten states: CA, CO, GA, IA, IL, MN, MO, NE, NJ, SD; and 50 different towns in Iowa. Skeptical of gun ban in stores

To the editor: I heard on the news that some stores will no longer allow guns to be brought into their stores, I don’t think that will prevent a person who has plans to do a mass shooting in a store from bringing their gun into a store, but if guns are allowed in stores and a shooting occurs in a store, it’s possible that if people are allowed to carry their gun into stores they might be able to shoot the gunman before he shoots people, the only people who will leave their gun in their vehicle after seeing a sign posted that says “no guns allowed in our store” are the law ...

Family fun event succeeds

We would like to thank the public for coming and making our JOURNEY OF HOPE such a big success. On June 22, we had a family fun event. We had a bike, walk/run to raise money to help local families with uninsured expenses when their child is seriously ill and child loss support. In addition, we raised money for the Children’s Cancer Research to help find a cure for children’s cancer across the United States. Tribute to a bur oak

An arborist from ISU recently reminded me of the vital lifesaving importance of trees, a fact that is frequently underestimated. This is especially true of long-lived oak trees and the most majestic of the oaks, the bur oak. Consequently, it hurt to see a stately and healthy bur oak removed recently by FD workers. The tree was killed by a torturous cutting off of its limbs one by one over a period of several days. In its place is a small concrete parking pad at a trail head. Back to school event succeeds

To the editor: Back to School event was a Success! This being our 16th annual Back to School Bash, we were pleased to partner with the Fort Dodge Middle School on the location this year. It was the perfect place to bring the families together before school starts for a fun evening of games, food, children and families getting to know community partners and kids receiving a backpack with school supplies to start their year off right.
