Alarmed at attacks on Asian Americans

To the editor: Though I have not witnessed this personally, my adopted daughter who is of Asian decent, and lives in another part of our country, has experienced it first-hand. It has progressed to the point that she is scared for her own safety. She is ostracized in part due to the unfounded rhetoric of certain groups of people that are trying to blame Asians for the pandemic. People are entitled to their opinion, but in doing so, through ignorance or racial intolerance have taken it upon themselves to see all people of Asian decent as villains in this pandemic. My daughter is as ...

Ball organizers say thank you

To the editor: We’re all in! The theme of the 37th Friends of Saint Edmond Ball was exemplified on so many levels and in so many ways these past few weeks. A journey that began late last year with the primary challenge of following a record-breaking year for funds raised quickly changed course in March as the COVID-19 global pandemic began to take hold in our country and state. We were faced with the harsh reality that the traditional SE Ball that has been penciled in on the first weekend in May for the last 36 years would not take place. Despite this devastating setback, the choice ...

Supports mayor’s stimulus plan

To the editor: I favor getting the economy back up and running in the most responsible way possible. If we consider the low levels of transmission in Webster County and the precautions people can and are taking, we should weigh what we are presently doing against unintended consequences of remaining locked down too long. The calculus of life saved through mitigation efforts must be compared to life saved through economic efforts. There are responsible ways to keep working that can be applied to many work areas and job sites: masks, social distancing, hand sanitizer, let the contractors ...

A message to the class of 2020

To the editor: From a member of the St. Edmond class of 1970 to the members of the class of 2020, Congratulations! You made it. Sure, you’re missing out on a quarter of direct instruction inside your school building, prom, spring sports, concerts, and events, and most of all, time with your friends before graduation. You may be uncertain about your future while some of your classmates seem to have it all figured out. But when you reach the point in life that my classmates and I have reached, you will realize that your senior year ending with a fizzle instead of a bang will be just a ...

Advocates for Renewable Fuel Standard

To the editor: While America’s farmers are facing challenges maintaining America’s food supply chain, oil refiners are busy in Washington looking to turn the economic crisis to their advantage. The refiners are asking the Environmental Protection Agency to either eliminate the Renewable Fuel Standard for the year or roll back the agreement on targets that President Trump himself brokered last year. It’s a sneak attack on America’s farmers that would undercut important agricultural markets at the worst possible time. The COVID-19 crisis is already causing a painful ripple ...

Supports Michehl for sheriff

To the editor: I am writing in support of Trevir Michehl for Webster County sheriff. Trevir has been employed as Webster County deputy sheriff for three years. Trevir was born and raised in Fort Dodge. Trevir has been in law enforcement for over 13 years but would bring with him a fresh perspective for our community. One can always see Trevir in the community working on projects such as Shop With a Cop, Cooper Watch Dog and anything that is asked of him. I have known Trevir for over 6 years. Trevir is a dedicated family man and is always committed to improving the community. ...
