Sheriff Fleener has been very helpful making sure that I’m informed and trained properly in order to help keep my students safe. To the editor: Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or organizations. The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves and pass onto others. Sheriff Luke Fleener is, by definition, an exceptional leader. Luke has worked his way into this leadership role by serving as a patrol deputy, detective, sergeant, SERT Commander, and most importantly Sheriff. He started his journey working in dispatching. From there he decided to move forward serving more in law enforcement. I had the opportunity to serve with him on the PD. In 1980, we moved to Dayton where L.J. served for five years as pastor of the United Methodist Church in Dayton. The Fleener family were members. We observed Luke as a regular participant of the activities of that church, a high school student, and a student at ICCC in the law enforcement studies.
