No. 10 Tritons back on the road
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The 10th-ranked Iowa Central football team hits the road for the final regular season time this Saturday, taking on No. 11 Garden City.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. from Broncbuster Stadium.
Winners of two straight, the Tritons (6-3 overall) will take one more road trip, as they are scheduled to play in Cedar Falls for a bowl game in December. They conclude the regular season back inside Dodger Stadium on Nov. 22 vs. 13th-ranked Butler.
Last Saturday, Iowa Central scored a 30-0 victory over Independence in the snow, as Ty Purdy tossed two touchdowns, hitting both Kamare Williams and Marcellus Chandler.
Williams, a Louisville transfer, caught three passes for 83 yards, as Purdy finished 8-for-13 for 111 yards.
The defense held Independence all game long, as Taylor Schaefer recorded 15 tackles with two sacks. Schaefer recently picked up an offer from Arkansas to go along with several others he has received this season.
Mason Chandler recorded 14 tackles and Christian Barney had 13. Jayden Wilson-Abrams registered a sack and Malik Johnson picked off a pass.
“Protecting the ball and being able to run it will be key,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “If we can do those two things, it will give us a huge advantage.”
Garden City (6-3) earned a 20-13 victory over Highland last week, bouncing back from a 35-21 loss to No. 2 Iowa Western. The Broncbusters also lost to Butler in double-overtime, 26-23, and Coffeyville, 26-24, as they conclude the year at top-ranked Hutchinson next week.
John Randle Jr., the son of former NFL star John Randle, is a transfer from Utah for Garden City. He has 290 yards and four touchdowns rushing, adding seven receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown in the air.
Tanner Helton has taken over at quarterback, throwing for 457 yards and four touchdowns. Starter Jaydyn Sisk has not played in the last two games after racking up 11 passing TDs and 746 yards with 414 yards rushing in seven games.
“Sisk will be back and he is a special player,” Montalto said. “They have missed him the last few games.
“They are a home run hitting team with some exceptional playmakers, so we need to try to keep them in front of us.”
