Seven bids for Gael girls

ARMSTRONG — The St. Edmond girls track and field team knows they have seven qualifiers set for next week and the state meet.

Junior Anna Lursen had a leg in four of those, as seniors Mariah Myers and Josie Harvey each added two bids to Des Moines beginning next Thursday inside Drake Stadium.

Behind those performances, the Gaels won the team title by one point over Newell-Fonda, finishing with 104 total.

Lursen captured gold in the 400-meter run, 800-meter run and 400 hurdles, running on the winning sprint medley relay with junior Faith Shirbroun, classmate Sasha Hess and Harvey.

Myers, a University of Iowa softball commit, swept the throwing events, winning the discus and shot put. Harvey, meanwhile, was first in the 100 hurdles and also had a fourth in the 100.

“What a night for the girls,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “The wind was brutal for much of the meet but they gave it everything they had and the results speak for themselves.

“This group just continues to amaze me. The goal was to be running our best at this point in the season and they did it. I’m excited to see them go and compete on the blue oval.”

Shirbroun, Harvey, Myrah Lemon and Brianna Saathoff finished fourth in the 4×100.

Lily Eslick was fifth in the 3,000, Shirbroun was fifth in the 100, Charlie Stucky placed sixth in the shot put, Saathoff was seventh in the 200 and Alex Leiting eighth in the 800.

The 4×800 of Naomi Valles, Leiting, Emmersyn Peters and Eslick finished in seventh, as the distance medley of McKenna Kvale, Lemon, Leiting and Valles was eighth.

In Class 1A, only the event winners automatically qualify for state. The rest of the field is comprised from the next 14 bests between all the sites.

Aaron Hindt secured himself a pair of event crowns, winning the 100 and 200 to advance to state. Anthony Valles was the runner-up in the 3,200, as Hindt and Valles ran on the second place 4×400 with Levi Odor-Westrum and Grant Galles.

The 4×800 of Odor-Westrum, Matthew Crimmins, Liam Shannon and Valles placed third, as did the distance medley of Galles, Hindt, Odor-Westrum and Valles.

“I thought the boys did a great job competing against not only tough competition, but incredibly windy conditions all night long,” SEHS head coach Cory Naughton said. “Hopefully, we’ll get through some other events on time, but it was great to see Aaron earn bids in the 100 and 200.

“These boys have worked hard all year and the entire coaching staff is proud of the effort and attitude they have given.”

For West Bend-Mallard, Maddie Fehr won the 100 and 200, Tyra Schupbach claimed the 3,00 and the 4×100 of Lilly Morey, Payton Akridge, Allie Fehr and Maddie Fehr placed first to qualify.

Newell-Fonda earned top finishes from Lindsey Wolf in the high jump and Ellie Sievers in the long jump, as both ran on the winning 4×200 with Kinzee Hinders and Anna Mercer.

The Mustangs also claimed the 4×400 behind Sievers, Hinders, Rylee Hogrefe and Mercer.

Starting at $2.99/week.
