Gaels go 2-0 on the road in baseball
CLARION — The St. Edmond baseball team ended a 26-game North Central Conference losing skid here Monday night, picking up their first-ever league doubleheader sweep in the process.
The Gaels earned 3-2 and 4-1 victories over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.
Blake Bartlett was in control on the mound in the opener, striking out 10 over six-plus innings of work. Thomas Ehn came on, recording the final two outs, including a strikeout, to secure the save.
Kinnick Henning had two hits. Bartlett, Ethan Swisher and Griffin Laufersweiler each had one. Laufersweiler scored a run and stole a base.
“Getting two great efforts on the mound was huge,” SEHS head coach Jordan Miller said. “We’d love to put teams away, but we just aren’t there yet, so pulling out two close wins on the road was a big step for us.”
For the Cowboys, Huxley Lingenfelter had two hits, Paxton Lingenfelter had an RBI and Charlie Campbell recorded a double, drove in a run and scored a run. Jacob Ruba went all seven, allowing just five hits with three strikeouts.
St. Edmond scored all three runs in the third after an error by Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, responding to a pair of runs put up by the Cowboys in the first inning.
Ehn continued to shine in the nightcap, striking out 13 over six innings of work to pick up his first career win after recording the save in the opener. He allowed just a lone single without issuing a walk.
Locked scoreless in the fifth, Carson Bargfrede connected on a hit that resulted in an inside-the-park home run, scoring Jack McElroy, who doubled to begin the inning. Bargfrede’s shot came on a 3-2 pitch.
“Sitting there 0-0 and seeing what Thomas Ehn was doing on the mound, it was so great that Carson came up and drove the gap,” Miller said. “It’s a deep park and the ball runs, but so does Carson Bargfrede.
“The kids just absolutely loved seeing that and exploded out of the dugout.”
St. Edmond added two more runs in the sixth on RBI doubles courtesy of Coltin Fevold and Grant Galles. Kinnick Henning scored on the Fevold hit after walking and stealing second.
Galles, who closed out the contest on the mound, finished the game 2-for-3. Garrett Royster stole a base.
“Grant kept battling and found a way to get it done,” Miller said. “It feels great to be leaving here with two wins.”
Booker Lingenfelter recorded an RBI in the seventh for Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.
With the sweep, it marked the first time St. Edmond had done so again a conference opponent since 2023 while also ending a three-game losing streak to the Cowboys. C-G/D had won six of seven entering the night.
The Gaels are right back in action on Tuesday, heading to Dayton to face Southeast Valley. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows hosts West Fork on Thursday.
