Fort Dodge wipes out Riverhawks

MASON CITY — The sixth-ranked Fort Dodge softball team had no trouble with Mason City here on Monday.

The Dodgers (5-1 overall) pounded out 36 hits and scored 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Riverhawks (0-6). Fort Dodge finished the contest with an 18-1 win in four innings, after opening with a 14-2 victory in five innings.

Head coach Andi Adams’s program has now taken 34 consecutive games from Mason City dating back to 2017. Adams has a career record of 89-6 versus the Riverhawks overall.

In the nightcap of the IAC Northern Division twinbill, the Dodgers had 22 hits. Teryn Rippentrop and Ellie Doster were both 4-for-4. Doster had a double and drove in five runs, while Rippentrop scored four times and drove in two.

The top five hitters in the lineup were a combined 16-for-18.

“Our top five were on fire,” Adams said. “This group has worked so hard and put in a lot of time. It’s paying off.”

Hope Alstott was 3-for-3 and Grace Nichols was 3-for-4. Alstott had a double and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring four times. Nichols had three RBI, including a double.

“Teryn and Macy (Wills) are on fire. Ellie is hitting the ball well, and Hope is back to form,” Adams said. “Defensively, Ememrsyn Lara made another great play (at second base). We are getting there by running the bases and making it the Dodger way.”

Calliegh Zimmermann had two hits and an RBI. Wills had two hits and an RBI. Also driving in single runs were Lara and Tori Jakeman.

“I’m proud of the way they have reacted,” Adams said. “We’ve run the bases well. We pulled up some girls to get some different looks and played a lot of girls.”

Sophomore Sydney Carver (3-1) allowed one hit in three innings of work for the victory in game two.

The Dodgers exploded for 14 hits in the opener. Fort Dodge plated four runs in the first two innings and added five in the fifth for the mercy rule victory.

Wills led the Dodgers at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Rippentrop, Hope Alstott, Doster and Zimmermann had two hits each. Doster had a home run and a double, while Wills, Aubrey Alstott and Zimmermann added two-baggers as well.

Sophomore Aubrey Alstott (2-0) picked up the win in the circle.

“(The Riverhawks) have some hitters, so we were focusing on hitting spots (with the pitching),” Adams said. “We are pitching by committee and helping each other out with the understanding of the bigger picture in mind.

“It’s a hitter’s game now, so we are trying to keep the hitters off balance.”

Hope Alstott drove in three and scored twice. Doster had two RBI. Zimmerman scored twice, while Nichols and Aubrey Alstott each drove in a run.

The Dodgers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Marshalltown at Rogers Park.
