Tritons qualify 10 for national mat

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The fifth-ranked (NJCAA) Iowa Central wrestling team was edged by No. 2 Indian Hills in the North Central district tournament here on Sunday, but the Tritons still qualified all 10 of their athletes for the national meet.

The Tritons had 149 points, which was just behind IHCC (154.5). No. 24 Iowa Western was third (118.5), followed by 12th-rated NIACC (103.5).

Drew Cooper (133 pounds), Kaden King (165), Lawrence Rosario (174) and Coen Grimm (197) were district champions for Iowa Central. Head coach Luke Moffitt’s squad also received runner-up performances from Jaydale Whitlock (125), Chance Davis (157), Sam Libby (184) and Umair Ahmad (285).

Matthew Roche was third at 141, with Gary Walker III (fourth at 149) also punching his ticket.

Cooper prevailed by technical fall in the finals, while King scored a decision. Rosario recorded a major decision in the gold-medal round, and Grimm escaped in sudden victory.

Rosario took third at nationals last season. Iowa Central, which was placed eighth or better nationally in 20 consecutive seasons, was the national runner-up a year ago.

The NJCAA tournament is back here on March 7-8.

Starting at $4.94/week.
