Area shines in 3A, 1A

CLEAR LAKE — Some rough weather put a pause on the action for a brief moment here Thursday night at a Class 3A state track and field qualifier, but athletes quickly regrouped and returned to compete.

Familiar foes Humboldt and Webster City went back-and-forth for those automatic bids to Des Moines and Drake Stadium, as the Wildcats punched six tickets and the Lynx earned eight.

Aubry Fisher advanced in both the 3,000 and 1,500, as she won the 3,000 in 11:04.51. Avery Fisher also qualified by placing second in the 3,000, with Brynn Malo adding a bid in the 800 by earning a silver.

Humboldt’s Jack Guy (shot put) and the shuttle hurdle relay were each second to qualify for state on the boys side.

For Webster City, Izzy Grossoehme took the 400 in 58.90 and placed second in the 200. The sprint medley of Kali Hartnett, Izzy Weinschenk, Tessa Hansen and Grossoehme were first in 1:50.30, as the shuttle hurdle relay placed second.

The Lynx boys had a first out of the distance medley relay of Jaxon Griffith, Kaleb Hansen, Rylan Stroner and Daniel Murillo-Delfin, as they clocked a time of 3:36.07.

Justin Callahan was second in the 400 hurdles, and Griffith second in the 110 hurdles. The WCHS sprint medley of Griffith, Hansen, Stroner and Callahan placed second to qualify.

For 3A, the first- and second-place finishers at each district qualify for state, with the remaining spots going to the next eight-best.

Algona scores 17 total auto bids

ORANGE CITY — The Algona track and field team claimed several automatic bids to the Class 3A state meet here Thursday night.

The Bulldog boys finished second to MOC-Floyd Valley by half a point, while the girls were third.

Gavin Weber claimed titles in both the 800 and the 1,600, and teammate Max Nevitt swept the throwing events. Algona was also first in the sprint medley and distance medley relays, with William Weichert (100), Evan Allie (200) and the 4×100 each finished second.

For the Bulldog girls, Reagan Haynes earned the discus crown and was second in the shot put, while Natalie Johnson placed second in both the 100 and 200. Sienna Fehr (400 hurdles), Jada Roberts (high jump) and Maya Lentz (long jump) all added silvers, as did the 4×800 relay.

The 3A state fields will be set by the first and second place finishers in each event from each district, in addition to the next eight-best.

West Bend-Mallard, N-F earn slew of bids

AUDUBON — The Newell-Fonda and West Bend-Mallard track and field teams picked up a handful of Class 1A automatic qualifiers here Thursday night.

For the Mustangs, Mareni Brabec won the 1,500, as they also claimed the distance medley and 4×800 relays. Ava Vie, Ellie Evers, Rylee Hogrefe and Brabec ran the distance medley, as Brabec, Hogrefe, Quinn Sievers and Elliot Hamilton completed the 4×800.

Danika Meyer was second in the 3,000. The N-F girls’ 4×400 relay also earned silver.

Allie Fehr won the high jump for the Wolverines and placed second in the 400 hurdles, Maddie Fehr was the 100 runner-up, and the girls 4×100 placed second for WB-M.

In 1A, the event winners at each district qualify, with the rest of the state field consisting of the next 14-best.

Emmetsburg’s Schany qualifies in 4 events

SPIRIT LAKE — Emmetsburg’s Rachel Schany will once again be busy at state track, as the senior qualified in four events.

Schany, a defending state champion in the high jump, won the 400, 800 and high jump here at a district meet while adding a runner-up in the long jump.

Event winners and second place finishers automatically qualify for state next week, with the next eight-best rounding out the fields in Des Moines.

Garrigan, North Union hit by weather

SAINT ANSGAR — A Class 1A qualifier hosted by Saint Ansgar was hindered by inclement weather, as only a handful of events were completed by press time.

Bishop Garrigan’s Avery Culbertson finished second in the shot put, as teammate Amaury Thomas was third in the discus.

The Golden Bear 4×800 relay placed second.

For North Union, Max Heinen earned an auto bid to state by winning the high jump.
