Huge road win for Triton men

CEDAR RAPIDS — Ryan Kirsch earned the first big signature win of his coaching career at Iowa Central.

It came at the expense of a school he knows well.

The Iowa Central men handed No. 4 Kirkwood an 83-62 defeat here Wednesday night.

Former Ames star Jalen Wynter knocked down seven 3-pointers for the second game in a row, while Jordan Cain led all players with 25 points for the Tritons (8-3 overall, 2-0 in the ICCAC). Kirsch previously served as an assistant with the Eagle program before eventually landing at Iowa Central.

Wynter finished with 23 points and Cooper Randall added 10. CJ Mitchell tallied nine points and five assists, while Lane Campbell contributed eight points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal.

Terrius Walker and Irakli Akhalaia each had six rebounds, Cain recorded five rebounds and four steals, and Iowa Central knocked down 13 triples in all. The Tritons led 42-22 at the half thanks to 25 combined points by Cain and Walker.

For the Eagles (9-1, 1-1), Zach Erwin scored 10 and Germaine Benson added nine. Kirkwood shot just 18 percent from the 3-point line and committed 14 turnovers.

The Tritons turned those 14 mistakes into 29 points, which helped them overcome Kirkwood’s size edge inside the paint.

Iowa Central returns home to host 11th-ranked Ellsworth on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
