A GRAND SWEEP

The Fort Dodge baseball team produced 34 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Des Moines North here Tuesday night at Ed McNeil Field.
Scores were 18-0 and 16-1, with both games ending in four innings.
Three different Dodger (6-1 overall) players hit a grand slam: Davis Underberg, Cael Adams and Kolton Schiltz.
Underberg, a junior, had a career game in the opener, hitting a grand slam as part of a 15-run third while going 2-for-2 with five RBI and two runs scored. He also recorded the final three hits, combining with Bennett Nekvinda on a no-hitter.
The two had five strikeouts and just two walks.
“I thought our guys came in and handled themselves well,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “We didn’t worry about what happened on Monday or who we were playing; we just went out and took care of business by scoring runs right out of the gate.
“It can be easy to not play like the better team when you are the better team. We didn’t drop our level of intensity and we stayed the course.”
Jaxson Dencklau also went deep in the opener to lead things off, scoring two runs with a steal, as Will McElroy and Bo Marsh both scored three runs. Caiden Fraher and Marsh each had two hits, with Fraher driving in three.
Schiltz added two runs scored and a pair of RBI, as 16 different Dodgers got in the lineup. Eleven of those had either a hit, run scored or an RBI.
In the nightcap, Adams and Schiltz connected on their blasts in back-to-back innings, as Adams drove in six and scored twice. Schiltz finished with four RBI and three runs scored, Cal Pederson had two hits and drove in two, Hayden Porter scored twice and both Marsh and Mason Frevert each had two runs.
On the mound, Tru McBride worked two scoreless innings to start, as sophomore Nolan Ahrens had three strikeouts on 18 pitches in his inning.
“We used some guys out there that we wanted to see how they would react to pitching,” Utley said. “Bennett could have given us more, but we wanted to see what Davis would do. Nolan was the same. I thought those guys did a nice job of throwing strikes.
“Now, though, we gotta amp it up starting with our next practice.”
Fort Dodge heads to Waukee on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
