Gaels can’t stop Webster City
WEBSTER CITY — The St. Edmond baseball team dropped a North Central Conference doubleheader to Webster City here Tuesday night.
Scores were 4-1 and 8-0.
In the opener, the Lynx erased an early 1-0 deficit, tying it in the third before scoring another run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Braylon Dyvig went six-plus, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. The lone run scored by St. Edmond was unearned.
Matthew Tesdahl had two hits with a double, Aiden Hrnicek drove in two, scored a run, reached base three times and had a double, and Alex Staley added an RBI.
For the Gaels, Coltin Fevold and Jack McElroy each had hits, Jackson Calvert scored the run and both Grant Galles and Kinnick Henning had steals.
Blake Bartlett pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts with three walks. Webster City came into the night averaging 11 runs per game with five inning-shortened contests to start the year.
“Credit to Dyvig, but we had a guy in (Bartlett) that was also very, very good against a team that has been crushing the ball,” SEHS head coach Jordan Miller said. “We stood punch-for-punch against their No. 1 and No. 2 on the mound. Now, it is about finding that mentality to punch back, which comes with experience and being able to play the game.”
Tesdahl went the distance in the nightcap, striking out 13 with one walk and three hits allowed. He helped his own cause with two hits and three RBI, as Staley and Syrus Willard each had two hits.
Carter Mickelson scored twice, as did Staley, for the Lynx.
Fevold recorded two hits off Tesdahl, including a double, as Garrett Royster had the other one. Thomas Ehn with four strikeouts in four innings on the mound.
“I thought both Thomas Ehn and Jacob Nieland gave us a good effort on the mound,” Miller said. “We saw plenty of growth and that is encouraging to see happening.”
St. Edmond returns home to host Manson Northwest Webster on Thursday, as Webster City heads to Newell-Fonda Friday.
