Area Class 3A squads hit district slate

Humboldt ran through a gauntlet in their non-district schedule, now the Wildcats and the rest of the state’s larger classes will dive into district play.

Humboldt (3-1, 0-0) suffered their first loss of the season last Friday, falling to No. 2 (Class 4A) North Polk a week after beating three-time defending champion Van Meter, who had won 26 straight contests.

Now the Wildcats will dive into Class 3A, District 2 play with a loaded league slate, starting with Hampton-Dumont/CAL (2-2, 0-0). The six teams have a combined record of 17-7.

Top-ranked Algona (4-0, 0-0) is the lone unbeaten as the Wildcats, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Charles City and Clear Lake all suffered their first loss last week.

The Bulldogs will travel to Charles City (3-1, 0-0). The Lynx (1-3, 0-0) will head to seventh-ranked Clear Lake (3-1, 0-0).

In area against area contests, Manson Northwest Webster (3-1, 1-0) will travel to Eagle Grove (0-4, 0-1) and East Sac County (1-3, 0-1) will head to Pocahontas Area (0-4, 0-1).

Third-ranked Emmetsburg (4-0, 1-0) will face a tough district opponent in Sioux Central (3-1, 1-0).

No. 1 Algona (4-0, 0-0) at Charles City (3-1, 0-0)

The top-ranked Bulldogs have rolled through their competition the last three weeks and will head back to the road against Charles City.

The Bulldogs beat Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (35-0) and the Comets suffered their first loss of the season against Mason City (49-14).

Iowa State recruit Alex Manske had a big game behind center and the Bulldog defense scored two touchdowns.

Manske threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Manske connected with Tyson VanDeWalle for two scores and Tate Slagle had a 47-yard scoring catch.

Evan Allie returned an interception 15 yards to paydirt and Slagle had a pick-six of 26 yards.

Manske is second in Class 3A with 974 yards passing. He is tied for second with 16 touchdowns and fourth with 10 passing touchdowns.

William Weichert has run for 300 yards and four scores. Slagle has four receiving touchdowns, while Allie and VanDeWalle have three each.

Allie has two interceptions returned for scores and a punt return touchdown.

Last week Deacon Caspers was the groundhog running 32 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Bruening has thrown for 188 yards and two scores.

Caspers has been the main threat, running for 813 yards and 11 scores. He has 141 of the Comets 184 carries.

No. 6 Humboldt (3-1, 0-0) at Hampton-Dumont/CAL (2-2, 0-0)

Humboldt and Hampton-Dumont/CAL enter district play, suffering their first losses of the season — on paper.

The Wildcats lost to No. 2 North Polk (4A) and the Bulldogs fell to Nevada (41-21).

Hampton-Dumont/CAL beat West Marshall on Sept. 13, but with the use of an ineligible player, they had to forfeit the contest.

The Wildcat defense had a hard time containing the Comets’ rushing attack, giving up 376 yards on the ground.

Humboldt’s Coen Matson threw for 207 yards on 15 of 20 passing for two touchdowns. He connected with Chase Flaherty for two scores. Keegan Groat had five grabs for 74 yards, while Valley Davis had 66 yards and Flaherty had 59.

Karson Rubel kicked a 29-yard field goal.

Matson has thrown for 896 yards and nine touchdowns and has a rushing score.

Groat has 15 catches for 441 yards and four scores, while Flaherty has three touchdowns.

Against Nevada Ryer Strother threw for 95 yards and two scores. He connected with Brady Harr and Colin Bird for touchdowns.

Bird also had a rushing touchdown. Bird has 360 yards and four touchdowns on the year.

Manson NW (3-1, 1-0) at Eagle Grove (0-4, 0-1)

Off to one of their best starts in recent memory, the Cougars cruised to a 28-7 victory over Pocahontas Area.

Kamden Birkey had yeoman-like effort, running for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries.

Logan Moline was an efficient 9-for-14 passing for 128 yards and a touchdown strike to Broc Patzner.

Barley has 91 carries for 542 yards and six touchdowns on the year. Matt Condon, Cooper Harman and Moline also have rushing touchdowns. Moline has thrown for two touchdowns.

Eagle Grove has struggled in their first four outings, falling to Sioux Central 37-8 last week. Josh Miller had the lone score, running in a 21-yard touchdown.

On the year Ascherl has a touchdown pass, while Trenton Robinson, Kaden Dayton and Miller have rushing touchdowns. Miller also has a receiving touchdown.

East Sac County (1-3, 0-1) at Pocahontas Area (0-4, 0-1)

Both the Raiders and Indians are coming off of losses. The Raiders fell to No. 3 Emmetsburg (42-6) and Pocahontas Area lost to Manson Northwest Webster (28-7).

The Raiders only mustered 73 yards of total offense, 10 on the ground.

On the year, quarterback Sam Julin has thrown for 519 yards and seven touchdowns.Landon Grindle has 236 yards rushing and four scores. Julin also has two rushing scores.

Asher Lawler has three touchdown catches, while Jack Gullett and Dawson Allen have two each.

Against the Cougars Logan Shiflett had 79 yards and a touchdown. Shiflett has 317 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, with a long 0f 83. Carson Bunda has thrown a touchdown and 486 yards. He connected with Gabe Ehn for a 22-yard score.

Sioux Central (3-1, 1-0) at No. 3 Emmetsburg (4-0, 1-0)

Emmetsburg has been on cruise control, outscoring their opponents 152-39 in their first four games.

Against the Raiders last week they ran for 356 yards on the ground. Carson Baak had 16 carries for 139 yards and four touchdowns. Gavin Swanson and Bradyen Yates also had scores.

Already in four games, the E-Hawks have run for 1,378 yards and 19 scores. Baak has 461 and eight touchdowns, while Swanson has 315 and six scores. Yates has run for 329 yards and four touchdowns.

Swanson has thrown two touchdowns and Baak has one. Byron Maina has two touchdown catches and Baak has one.

Sioux Central has won two straight and is coming off a 37-8 win over Eagle Grove where they ran for 268 yards. Kinnick Fahrenkrog had 81 yards and three scores, while Owen Mills had a rushing touchdown. Mills threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Titus Koster.

Fahrenkrog has rushed for 412 yards and seven touchdowns, while Mills has 438 on the ground and five scores.
