Keckeisen stays unbeaten for UNI

KANSAS CITY — Parker Keckeisen kept his perfect record intact and moved into the 184-pound quarterfinals here Thursday at the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships.

Keckeisen, a junior from Northern Iowa, posted a convincing 19-4 technical fall over Will Feldkamp from Iowa State in the second round. He will meet David Key of Navy for a spot in the semifinals on Friday inside the T-Mobile Center.

The top-seed, Keckeisen was a runner-up last year at the NCAAs and is coming off his fourth Big XII championship. He has also finished third twice before. Iowa State’s strong day was led by Evan Frost, Anthony Echemendia, Casey Swiderski, David Carr and Yonger Bastida, who all advanced to the quarterfinals. The Cyclones are tied for second with Iowa (24.5) and behind Penn State, as the Panthers are 16th.

Carr, a former NCAA champion and defending runner-up who is the four-seed, handled Evan Maag of George Mason with a technical fall before bouncing Hunter Garvin from Stanford, 10-1, at 165.

Frost, the eight-seed, claimed two decisions at 133, Echemendia, the five-seed, had a technical fall and a decision at 141, and Swiderski, the eight-seed, scored two decisions at 149. Bastida, unbeaten at 26-0 on the season and No. 2, claimed a pin and a technical fall at heavyweight.

Frost meets top-seed Daton Fix of Oklahoma State, Echemendia gets Ryan Jack from NC State, Swiderski battles No. 1 seed Ridge Lovett of Nebraska, Carr gets Dean Hamiti from Wisconsin and Bastida meets Lucas Davison from Michigan.

Kysen Terukina, Cody Chittum, Will Feldkamp and MJ Gaitan will compete in consolation matches.

Joining Keckeisen in the quarters from UNI will be Jared Simma at 174 pounds. Simma topped Philip Conigliaro of Harvard, 7-0, and Tyler Eischens from North Carolina, 6-5.

Eischens upset Iowa’s Patrick Kennedy in the first round.

Simma, the No. 28 seed, will meet Michigan’s Shane Griffith, the four-seed.

“I’ve been here the last two years in the stands watching,” Simma said. “Now, I get to wrestle in it. I’ve been here in the environment and now I get to just g out and wrestle instead of watching.

“I am so grateful to be here. I got an at-large bid and I got to take that shot.”

Cael Happel, Ryder Downey and Wyatt Voelker all kept their medal hopes alive with consolation round victories.

Friday’s quarterfinals will air on ESPNU and stream on ESPN+ beginning at noon with the semifinals and blood rounds set for 8 p.m. on ESPN and ESPN+. Saturday’s medal rounds are set for ESPNU and ESPN+ with the finals on ESPN and ESPN+.
