Gaels compete in NCC tennis tourney

WEBSTER CITY — The St. Edmond boys tennis team continued to find success on the courts, competing here Wednesday at the North Central Conference Tournament.

Leading the way for the Gaels was the doubles team of Ethan Cibert and Grant Anderson, as they placed fourth overall in the first flight, as St. Edmond finished with 10 team points.

Nevada took home top honors followed by Clear Lake, Iowa Falls-Alden, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Webster City and the Gaels. Nevada’s Connery Varsa and Noah Johnson won singles titles, as the Cubs also claimed the top doubles bracket.

“I am very proud of the boys and the effort they gave out there,” SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. “We continue to make impressive strides in the right direction after bringing this program back. It hasn’t been easy, but these boys have taken pride in everything they have done and continue to accomplish.”

Abram Ribbens and Alex Hayes were fifth overall in the second flight of doubles, Dylan Brokaw placed fifth in the second flight of singles and Josh Abbiehl was sixth in the first flight of singles.

Cibert and Anderson were the No. 5 seed, knocking off No. 4 seed Max Anderson and Blake Arjes of Webster City in the quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. They fell to the No. 1 overall seed of Walker Williams and Levi Reynolds from Clear Lake in the semis and fell in straight sets in the third place match to Tristan Kappel and Isaiah Nelson of Iowa Falls-Alden.

Ribbens and Hayes, the No. 4 seed, bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals to place fifth with a win over Fabian Ferto-Holdgrafer and Vincent Bittner of Webster City.

St. Edmond concludes the regular season on Monday when they return here for a dual with Webster City beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
