Triton men in action at districts
SIOUX CITY — Francis Lockwood and Eric Zuniga made big moves up the leaderboard at the North Central District championship for the Iowa Central men’s golf team.
But in the end, the Tritons were unable to crack the Top-5, finishing seventh overall as Kirkwood rallied past Northeast. Southeast was third followed by NIACC, Southwestern, DMACC and Iowa Central.
Ted Sargeant finished off his run at the top of the leaderboard, shooting 6-under for the three rounds to lead Kirkwood to an 11th consecutive team crown.
Lockwood found his rhythm in the third round, firing a 2-over for his best score of the week to move up six spots into a tie for 10th overall. He had three birdies, including ones on the first and second holes, to go along with 10 pars.
Zuniga jumped up five spots behind a round of 1-under, finishing 14th. He had two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars, including eight straight on the back before recording a birdie on No. 18.
Only five golfers shot in the red during the third round, as Northeast’s Luke Bonser was at 2-under while Sargeant, Zuniga, Ryan Lynch of Kirkwood and D’Arcy Whyte from Northeast all shot 1-under rounds.
Peyton Walker was tied for 25th, Filip Jarheden tied for 32nd, and former Webster City standout Cael Nixon placed 36th.
Iowa Central’s women’s team did earn an at-large bid to the NJCAA Div. II Women’s Golf Championship, which will be held May 12-15 at the Ol’Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Tritons picked up one of three at-large bids after qualifying Okira Quintero and Syeda Laiba Shah as individuals to nationals.
