FD graduate Ayala earns three-seed for NCAA tournament

KANSAS CITY — The best amateur collegiate wrestlers in the world will come together here March 21-23 for the NCAA Div. I Championships inside the T-Mobile Arena.

Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa will be well represented throughout the brackets with 25 combined qualifiers.

Leading the way for the Hawkeyes will be former Fort Dodge Senior High state champions Drake Ayala and Brody Teske. Ayala is one of five Iowa qualifiers who earned a Top-10 seed.

Ayala, a sophomore competing at 125 pounds, is the No. 3 seed, with Teske, who is a senior at 133, is the No. 15.

Throughout the season, Ayala was tested, going 23-4 overall including a win vs. No. 1 seed Braeden Davis of Penn State. He is also 1-1 against No. 4 seed Matt Ramos of Purdue.

Real Woods is the other three-seed for the Hawkeyes, as the senior competes at 141 pounds. Michael Caliendo is the six-seed at 165, Patrick Kennedy the No. 7 at 174 and Zach Glazier the seven-seed at 197.

Caleb Rathjen, Jared Franek and Bradley Hill are the other Iowa qualifiers.

Yonger Bastida is the highest seed for the Cyclones, as the heavyweight is No. 2. David Carr is the four-seed at 165 and Anthony Echemendia the No. 5 at 141.

Carr is seeking a fifth All-American honor who won the 2021 NCAA title and was a runner-up last year. He also finished third in 2022.

Evan Frost, Casey Swiderski, Cody Chittum, MJ Gaitan and Will Feldkamp are the other Iowa State qualifiers.

Returning national runner-up Parker Keckeisen earned his second consecutive No. 1 seed at 184 pounds after going a perfect 26-0 this past year for the Panthers. He is one of seven qualifiers for the program under Doug Schwab.

Cael Happel at 141 and Ryder Downey at 157 both earned Top-10 seeds.

Julian Farber, Jack Thomsen, Jared Simma and Wyatt Voelker are also slated for matches.
