DES MOINES — Kierra Jungers is making sure to take in each and every moment this week at the state tournament.

That’s because this marks the final time she will play for her dad, legendary Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers.

The second-ranked Mustangs made sure Wednesday would not be the finale for the duo, rolling past Calamus-Wheatland and into the Class 1A semifinals, 68-30.

Newell-Fonda (23-2 overall) will now face Remsen St. Mary’s (24-0) back here inside Wells Fargo Arena on Friday at 3:15 p.m. The four-time state champions are seeking a fifth appearance in the title round since 2018.

The Mustangs are now 11-0 in the quarterfinal round since 2013.

Jungers led a balanced attack with 15 points, as Kinzee Hinders added 14 and McKenna Sievers 10. Isabel Bartek and Anna Mercer each chipped in eight.

“This week is going to fly by,” Kierra Jungers said. “I am so excited to be playing at the state tournament one last time for my dad. I have loved playing for him these last four years, and I am so sad that this is the last run.

“I am definitely soaking up all of these amazing memories.”

Veterans of state in their seventh consecutive appearance, the Mustangs started red-hot versus the Warriors (24-2), leading 23-11 after the first. They proceeded to go 17-for-24 from the field over the next 16 minutes in building an incredible 60-22 advantage.

The game was tied for all of 15 seconds and Newell-Fonda never trailed, improving to 31-14 all-time at state. The 31 victories is tied for second with Mediapolis — 12 behind Ankeny’s record of 43.

“It feels great to get the first game under our belt,” Dick Jungers said. “We got all of the first-game jitters out and we are so excited to get to play against on Friday.

“(In the second and third quarters) we were able to keep up our pace, get the game going in our favor and move the ball around on offense.”

Twelve different Mustang players saw the court, and all of them either scored or contributed a rebound to the cause. Hinders had a team-high seven rebounds with Jungers and Jocee Walsh each adding five.

Sievers recorded five of the 24 steals for the team, as Jungers and Hinders each added four. Sievers also dished out seven assists in just 15 minutes of game action.

Calamus-Wheatland, making its state debut, had only lost to top-ranked North Linn earlier this year. The Warriors were led by Kahlie Hill, who had nine points.

Remsen St. Mary’s knocked off Martensdale-St. Marys in the final quarterfinal of the night, with North Linn and Council Bluffs St. Albert advancing on the top half of the bracket.
