FD bloodline runs deep at state
DES MOINES — A number of wrestlers with Fort Dodge roots continue to show their mettle at the state tournament this week.
Sophomore Nolan Fellers, the son of two-time FDSH third-place finisher Adam Fellers, is in the Class 3A semifinals at 150 pounds. The second-seeded Fellers (33-2) advanced with a pin and a major decision.
Fellers, who captured bronze as a freshman in 2023, now faces sixth-seeded Logan Trenary of Southeast Polk on Friday.
On the top side of the 150-pound bracket, fourth-seeded senior Lucas Bruhl of Ankeny Centennial is also in the semis. Bruhl scored a technical fall and a major decision, improving to 20-1 on the year.
Bruhl, the son of 1988 Dodger state champ Brad Bruhl, squares off with No. 1 seed Bas Diaz of Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday.
Sixth-seeded Bondurant-Farrar junior Jordan Rial (165 pounds) lost in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday in his 3A quarterfinal match. No. 3 seed Gabe Carver of Urbandale escaped with a 3-2 victory, sending Rial to the backside.
Rial is the son of 1999 Fort Dodge state runner-up Pat Rial and fellow FDSH graduate Heidi (Collins) Rial.
Also at 165, seventh-seeded junior Wesley Anderson of Waukee (22-7) advanced to the quarterfinals before suffering a loss. Anderson is the son of 1992 Dodger state runner-up Courtney Anderson and FDSH graduate Kristin (Erickson) Anderson. He heads to the backside.
Lucas Bruhl’s brother, Isaac, was also ousted in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Ankeny Centennial junior, who is 20-2 and is seeded fourth, remains in medal contention.
No. 13 seed Gavin Benton, the son of 1995 FDSH grad Mark Benton, suffered a setback in the second round for Iowa City Liberty. The 175-pound senior bounced back with a victory, but was ousted 8-5 in his third-round consolation match. Benton bows out at 30-10 overall.
