Gaels drop one-point tilt in wild finish
JEWELL — A wild ending here Thursday night left the St. Edmond boys with their first loss of the season.
Landon Greufe stole the in-bounds pass and scored the game-winning points in a 57-56 victory for the Hawks with just seconds left.
The loss spoiled what had been a strong finish to the game, as the Gaels (2-1 overall) took the lead on a putback by Hunter Horn with 22 seconds left.
After Jack McElroy blocked the shot of Reece Ricke, South Hamilton (5-0) was forced to foul. After a successful foul, Greufe found himself with the ball under the basket and converted.
“It was a tough play and nobody got open so he had to get it in,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “That happens sometimes when you have young kids playing. It’s a learning experience and we’ll know what we need to do if we are in that situation next time.
“But I was proud of the kids. They battled against a tough, physical experienced team that is now 5-0. We would have loved to have won it, but for this bunch to be right there, that is a positive.”
Horn accounted for the final six points of the game for St. Edmond, as the sophomore finished with a game-high 23 points. Jakob Koopman added nine with Sam Mericle and Andrew Clavey each scoring six.
JT Laufersweiler chipped in five, Grant Galles four and Jack McElroy three.
For the Hawks, Rylan Ubben had 21 points.
The Gaels return to action Friday night when they travel to Humboldt for a North Central Conference matchup. South Hamilton entertains Perry in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
