Dodgers win road dual
DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team split a triangular in Des Moines on Thursday.
The Dodgers won their second dual of the season beating Waterloo East 48-12. They fell to Des Moines Public 41-30.
“They’re starting to learn the whole dual process,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenigh. “They struggle seeing it on paper and then realize that things can change when they move up and down the lineup.
“They have to understand the process and always be ready.”
Alejandra Manzanilla (105) was the only Dodger to win two wrestled matches. She beat Des Moines Public’s Kennedy Pahl 9-2 and earned a fall in 2:47 over Waterloo East’s Keilyla Martin.
In the win over Waterloo East, fifth-ranked Mariaha Benedict (135) pinned Honey Govea in 38 seconds. Benedict also had a forfeit win.
“She (Alejandra) had a good match against Waterloo East and won a tough match against Des Moines,” Koenig said. “She had a good night and was the only girl to wrestle twice.”
Maddie Pulis (170) pinned Torilyn Simmons of Des Moines Public in 53 seconds. Pulis also had a forfeit win.
Andee Barwin (120) won a tight 8-7 decision over Des Moines Public’s Tosh Cherniss.
“Andee wrestled hard the whole match,” Koenig said. “That girl got tired in the third period and got a stalling call and then Andee escaped with 15 seconds left.
“Our conditioning is what wins matches late and the girls are starting to realize that.”
Macy Brown (130) and Delaney O’Connor (140) had two forfeit wins each.
Kaitlynn Van Demark (115), Lucy Porter (145) and Kate Feltz (155) had forfeit victories.
The Dodgers are back in action on Friday and Saturday when they wrestle in the Council Bluffs Tournament. Action begins at noon.
