Dodgers 2nd in Carroll

CARROLL — The Fort Dodge volleyball team capped off another strong week with a runner-up showing here Saturday at the Carroll Tournament.

The Dodgers reeled off four consecutive wins before falling to South Central Calhoun in the finals.

“It was the best tournament record Fort Dodge volleyball has made in a long time,” FDSH head coach Lexi Astor said. “Although we had a rocky few games in pool play, they pulled together for the wins. We played against a lot of teams who ran a very different style of volleyball than we are used to playing with lots of tips and junk over the net.

“Inititally we did not respond the greatest to the chaos but I’m proud of how they stuck together to come out on top.”

Fort Dodge scored victories over the host Carroll, IKM-Manning, Newell-Fonda and Audubon. They had previously posted a three-set win vs. South Central Calhoun last month at the Humboldt Invitational.

Prior to the tournament run, the Dodgers reeled off wins over Des Moines Lincoln, Ames and Mason City. They look to remain perfect in conference play on Tuesday when they host Marshalltown.

“Obviously the day would have been complete if that championship game would have gone our way but the girls played hard,” Astor said. “At the end of the day, South Central Calhoun played hard and beat us; that’s all there is to it.

“I’m glad to got the opportunity to play this weekend and work some kinks out. We play Marshalltown at home on Tuesday and they are the other leaders in our division of the conference. It will be a tough battle for us as we hope to maintain our perfect conference record.”
