Tritons to wrestle in district championships
IOWA FALLS — The Iowa Central wrestling team has put together a memorable year to date, as they look to add another mark on the resume here Sunday at the North Central District Championships.
Action begins at 10 a.m.
Earlier this year, the Tritons captured the NJCAA national duals title and were crowned ICCAC regular season dual champions. But they have not won a regional title since 2019, as Iowa Western, Indian Hills and North Iowa Area have claimed the last three.
Prior to that, though, Iowa Central won regionals every year from 2014-19 and captured all but one title from 2011-19.
Iowa Western’s Jakason Burks and Iowa Central’s Phil Smith, Jr. are the lone returning individual champions, with Smith having captured his championship in 2021.
The region boasts 27 ranked wrestlers, including at least one at each weight. Burks is No. 1 at 125 with Fabian Padilla of Iowa Western second at 157 and Mirzo Khayitov from Ellsworth second at 165.
Riley Bettich of Indian Hills, Grant Lyman from Iowa Western and Kawaun Deboe of Indian Hills are third at their respective weights.
Qualifiers will advance to the NJCAA Championships, to be held March 3-4 in Council Bluffs.
