One last hurrah for Oakes-Sudhish

DES MOINES — Caelan Oakes-Sudhish only has a few matches left in his high school career, and he wants to make the most out of the opportunity.
The Southeast Valley senior is making his third state trip and after a seventh-place performance a year ago. Now he is looking to climb the podium.
“The goal for this week is the same as every other wrestler that has entered Wells Fargo — win the bracket,” Oakes-Sudhish said. “I am taking it one match and one win at a time and focusing on staying in positioning every match.
“Win or lose, I am going to enjoy these final few matches with the SV on my chest and I will walk off the mat with my head high knowing I had a great career.”
Oakes-Sudhish currently sits at 152 career victories and enters the tournament with a 37-5 record.
“Placing at state last year was awesome,” Oakes-Sudhish said. “I had the goal of placing higher on the podium, and having the experience of wrestling and placing has helped me a lot.”
The Jaguar senior earned the eighth-seed at 120 pounds and will have a first round bye. He will face the winner of nine-seed seed Shane Hanford (20-1) of West Marshall and No. 24 Kyler Jessup (23-22) of Solon.
“This year has been a great season,” Oakes-Sudhish said. “Reaching career and mental milestones, but I am definitely not at my peak and I still have more to prove and there is no better place to peak than Wells Fargo.”
Oakes-Sudhish will be joined by teammate Nathan Graves (220). Graves (24-18), the No. 24 seed, will meet Glenwood’s Mason Koheler (43-7).
Graves is the younger brother of Southeast Valley graduate and currently Iowa defensive lineman Aaron Graves.
Humboldt
The Wildcats enter the state tournament with a trio of veterans.
Jase Goodell (152) and Jayden Gargano (126) will be making their third trips and Cyler Cirks (113) is going back-to-back.
Goodell (39-4) will be making his third state appearance. Goodell qualified as a freshman and a sophomore.
Goodell is the eighth-seed and will face the winner of South O’Brien’s Coy De Boer (39-2) and Winterset’s Zeke Hoven (28-15).
Cirks (34-7) is the fifth seed for the Wildcats. He will square off with the winner of West Delaware’s Brayden Maury (34-5) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Rigo Bobadilla (20-18).
Gargano (38-6) is the 10th seed and will wrestle Oskaloosa’s Kaiden Parker (29-17).
Gaige Allen (29-13) will meet Wayne Johnston (28-12) of Knoxville at 182 pounds and Brady Beers (21-23) will face No. 9 Easton O’Brien (21-10) of Atlantic at 138 pounds.
Webster City
The Lynx enter the state tournament on a hot streak, after taking the North Central Conference title, clinching a sixth-place state duals finish and capturing their first district championship since 1991.
Five Lynx will vye for state glory.
Webster City senior CJ Hiisler (195), and juniors Carson Doolittle (120) and Jaxon Cherry (220) are back. Hisler and Doolittle were both third, while Cherry was fourth in 2022.
In his third season as a Lynx, Doolittle (36-1), the No. 1 seed at 120, has two bronze medal finishes. Doolittle’s first round opponent will be ADM’s No. 16 Jacob Alexander (21-12) or Eddyville-Blakesburg’s No. 17 Landen Davis (29-2)
Hisler (26-1) is the second-seed at 195 pounds and will face the winner of No. 15 Jack Mendoza (27-5) of Eagle Grove or Perry’s Keegan Snyder (38-9).
Cherry (35-2) is the No. 3 and will face either No. 14 Cole Sigler (32-8) of Anamosa or Atlantic’s Miles Mundorf (31-12).
Freshman Linden Phetxoumphone (106), the younger brother of two-time state champion Camron Phetxoumphone, is the fourth-seed.
Phetxoumphone (35-2) will compete against No. 13 Braxton Hass of Atlantic (29-9) or West Marshall’s Jack Decier (20-11), the 20th seed.
Austin Mason (32-9) the No. 18 seed will wrestle Atlantic’s Jarrett Armstrong (37-12), the No. 15 seed at 170 pounds.
Eagle Grove
A trio of Eagles will take to the mat at the state tournament.
Junior Mack Morgan (113) will wrestle inside Wells Fargo for the third time, while seniors Kaden Pritchard (120) and Jack Mendoza (195) are making their first trips.
Morgan (113) finished sixth as a freshman and will have a first round bye as the sixth seed.
Pritchard (26-3), who passed 100 career wins, is the 19th seed at 120 pounds. Pritchard (26-3) will face No. 14 Seth Ettleman (44-6) of Southwest Iowa.
Mendoza (27-5) is the 15th seed at 195 and will face No. 18 Keegan Snyder (38-9) of Perry.
Algona
The Bulldogs enter Des Moines on a hot streak, winning the district championship, crowning six champions and qualifying seven.
Second-ranked Tate Slagle (43-4) is the fourth seed at 138 pounds. Barrett Morgan (43-2) is the seven at 126 and Jacob Zabka (25-5) is the eight at 113 pounds.
All three will receive first round byes.
Isaac Wilson (38-8) and Taevyn Zinnel (35-9) are both 11 seeds. Wilson will meet No. 22 Ben Walsh (28-15) of Sioux City Heelan at 120 pounds and Zinnel will face No. 22 Charlie Showalter (33-13) of Hampton-Dumont/CAL at 132.
Cohen Reffer (27-11) is the 16th seed at 285 pounds and will wrestle Glenwood’s Trent Patton (34-9).
Ashton Moreno (31-17), the only district runner up for the Bulldogs is the 23rd seed at 145 pounds. He’ll meet Carroll’s 10-seed Cooper Ludwig (40-2).
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows
Seven Cowboys earned state berths, with Mack Seaba (27-12) earning a first round bye as the fifth seed at 160 pounds.
No. 16 Ryan Hartwig (21-13) will face No. 17 Austin Hansen (32-7) of Estherville-Lincoln Central.
Kaden Hanson (26-12), also the 16 seed, will compete against Davenport Assumption’s Peyton Pilgrim (26-10) at 138.
Ethan Traub (25-15) is the 19th seed and will face Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Dalton VanWhye (39-16) at 126.
Rigo Bobadilla (20-10) is 21st at 113 and will compete against No. 12 Brayden Maury (34-5) of West Delaware.
Caleb Seaba (30-11) and Ashtin Willms (24-16) are both the 22nd seeds. Seaba will meet No. 11 Abe Bushong (39-6) of Winterset at 145. Willms’s first opponent is Cole Binning (44-5) of Clarke.
Greene County
State veterans Kael Petersen (38-0) and McKinley Robbins (44-0) are looking to finish their careers strong.
Petersen (132) and Robbins (138) No. 1 seeds. Petersen is looking for his third state championship and Robbins, an Oregon State recruit, is looking for his fourth trip to the finals and his second title.
Gavin Scheuermann (19-3) is the 11th seed and will face Columbus/WMU’s Cole Storm (39-12) in the 160 pound opener.
No. 12 Brendt Dennhardt (36-5) will face No. 21 Caden Vellinga (20-7) of West Marshall at 145 pounds.
Class 2A action will begin at 1:30 p.m. inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
