Gaels square off with Hampton-Dumont/CAL

The St. Edmond basketball teams compete one final time at home this regular season, hosting Hampton-Dumont/CAL.

Tip is set for 6:15 p.m. with the girls game, while boys will follow.

In the boys game, former Fort Dodge Senior High standout Brian Niesen will lead the Bulldogs into town. Niesen is in his first season as head coach after serving for several years at Mason City in various roles.

Leading the way for Hampton-Dumont/CAL is junior Scott Harr, as he averages 21.4 points and 14 rebounds. Harr posted a school-record 45 in a 75-60 victory last month.

Sam Mericle leads SEHS at 19.4 points per game, shooting 47 percent from the field and 34 percent from the 3-point line. Jackson Palmer is at 17 points and Jack McElroy seven.

Palmer, Aaron Lursen and Johnny Dickerson will be honored on Senior Night for St. Edmond.

St. Edmond found out its postseason assignment, as they will head to West Fork on Feb. 13 in a Class 1A, Region 2 boys contest.

Earlier this year, Hampton-Dumont/CAL earned a 38-14 victory over the Gael girls in Hampton. The Bulldogs have won each of the last 16 meetings between the schools.

Sophomore sisters Jordan and Brooklyn Valley lead the squad, as Jordan averages 11 points and Brooklyn 8.5. Classmate Lily Hambly averages five points and eight rebounds per game.

For St. Edmond, sophomore Lauren Gibb averages over five points per contest, with sophomore Josie Harvey and senior Anna Kolacia at a little over four. Freshman Anna Lursen pulls down 4.6 rebounds a night.
