No. 6 Gaels win ranked contest
REMSEN — The sixth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team secured a split here Saturday at the CYO vs. ranked teams.
After falling to No. 15 (4A) Bishop Heelan, 8-2, the Gaels topped 15th-ranked (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s, 6-5 in eight innings.
Ella Vandi drove in Faith Shirbroun with one out in the eighth to tie it, coming around to score the game-winning run after stealing third and advancing on a passed ball. Both Vandi and Shirbroun made the all-tournament team.
Shirbroun finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, as Sophia Schlienz had two hits. Toryn Helle earned the win, striking out a pair of batters.
Vandi stole three bases and Schlienz one, as Vandi also scored twice.
“That was a really good one to get,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “Anytime you match up with a 1A ranked team, it’s important that you walk away with a victory.”
St. Edmond (9-2 overall) scored four runs in the first before finally breaking through in the eighth.
In the loss to Heelan, Shirbroun was 3-for-3 with a run scored, as Helle and Greenlee Crimmins both drove in a run. Shirbroun had a triple and a double.
The Gaels return to action Monday night when they host 15th-ranked (3A) Clear Lake at Rogers Park in North Central Conference play at 7:30 p.m.
