Dodgers split at Bakey Classic
DES MOINES — The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team finished play here Saturday at the Bakey Classic with a split, falling to No. 6 (5A) Dallas Center-Grimes and shutting out Urbandale.
In the opener vs. the Mustangs, the Dodgers (9-2 overall) rallied to take an 8-6 lead before Dallas Center-Grimes plated three runs in the sixth to win it as the time limit had been reached.
Ellie Doster and Grace Nichols both drove in two runs, as Meg Marsh had two hits. Maeleena Meyer and Emersyn Lara both scored twice, with Hope Alstott stealing two bases.
“We showed a lot of fight battling back there and taking the lead against a very good DC-G team,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “We’ve just got to keep our focus and know that games like these will prepare us for the stretch run.”
In a 6-0 victory over Urbandale, Marsh connected on a solo home run in the fourth and Calliegh Zimmermann had a triple, scoring two runs. Zimmermann also had two hits, as Nichols and Aubrey Alstott each drove in a run.
Alstott worked all six innings inside the circle, striking out four while allowing just three hits and no walks.
“We really played a great game vs. Urbandale,” Adams said. “Aubrey did a nice job keeping them off balance, Meg had a big home run and our defense was flawless.”
The Dodgers return to action on Monday when they travel to Ames for an Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
