DES MOINES — Webster City may have four highly-ranked individuals, but pushing for team hardware is their main concern.

After four first-round byes on Wednesday at the state wrestling tournament, the Lynx used four bonus-point victories to advance to the quarterfinals. Top-seed Carson Doolittle (120), second-seed CJ Hisler (195) and third-seeded Jaxon Cherry (220) are making their state return, while No. 4 seed freshman Linden Phetxoumphone (106) and senior Austin Mason (170) are making their first trip as well.

The Lynx are currently tied with Glenwood for sixth with 27 points. Osage (47.5), Mount Vernon (33), West Delaware (30), Creston (28.5) and Sergeant Bluff-Luton (27.5) round out the Top-5.

“Finishing high as a team was always the goal in mind going into this year’s tournament,” said Hisler, who is in his senior season. “It was a good showing, and I believe that we can continue to do well.”

Doolittle and Hisler were third-place finishers here last year. Cherry was fourth.

Doolittle (37-1) earned a major decision over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Landen Davis (30-3) by a 9-1 count.

Upcoming for Doolittle is ninth-seed Shane Hanford (2-1) of West Marshall.

“Getting to state this year with my teammates was really exciting…just to be competing with some of my good friends and seeing all of their hard work pay off,” Doolittle said. “Getting third (in 2022) motivated me a lot, and just made me want to get myself better in the offseason and work in areas that I needed to.”

Hisler (27-1) pinned Perry’s Keegan Snyder (39-10) in 2:44 and will now face seventh-seed Carter Smuck (38-8) of Winterset.

Cherry (36-2) made quick work of Anamosa’s Cole Sigler (33-9) in 50 seconds. Cherry will face sixth-seed Henry Christensen (42-7) of Ballard.

“It (placing fourth a year ago) has made me into a mental giant,” Cherry said. “It’s just amazing. It’s a lot of fun, especially watching my teammates wrestle.”

Phetxoumphone (36-2) started the championship second round strong for the Lynx with a fall in 1:22 over Jack Decker (21-12) of West Marshall.

On the horizon for Phetxoumphone is 12th-seeded Jayson Stevens (37-7) of Hampton-Dumont-CAL.

Mason (33-10) won his opening round match with a fall in 5:30 over Jarrett Armstrong (37-13) of Atlantic. He then dropped a 19-4 tech fall match to second-seed Ethan DeLeon (42-0) of Bishop Heelan.

The 18th-seeded Mason will square off with No. 16 Michael Ohotto (36-8) of Garner-Hayfield.

Class 2A quarterfinal and consolation action begins at 1:30 p.m. inside Wells Fargo Arena.

Starting at $4.94/week.
