Coffeyville pulls away from Tritons

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — A week off didn’t appear to impact the seventh-ranked Iowa Central football team at the start here Saturday night.

But over the course of the final three quarters, the Tritons struggled to solve Coffeyville, falling 47-30 after the Red Ravens scored a pair of late touchdowns.

Iowa Central had cut the deficit down to 34-30 with just under 10 to play when Zach Marker connected with Desna Washington to complete an 11-play, 70-yard drive. Coffeyville, though, responded with a series that lasted nearly six minutes to push the lead back to 10.

Liam Wahe got the Tritons on the board in the first with a 21-yard field goal, while Marker ran in a score himself to make it 10-0. Jadon Washington put Iowa Central back on top, 16-14, just before halftime with a 5-yard TD run.

In the third quarter, Justin Silverstein ran it in from 18 yards out to again give the Tritons the lead, as they also converted the two-point attempt to make it 24-21. That would be the last time they were in control, though, as Coffeyville scored on a 13-yard run by Dorian Lewis and a 1-yard TD from Ferontay Cutler to go up 34-24.

Marker finished 21-for-36 for 208 yards, while Silverstein was 9 of 14 for 104. Marker led the team with 44 yards rushing and Desna Washington finished with seven receptions for 96. Cal Weidemann caught four passes for 67 and Travis Isaac had seven for 62.

Deonte Bryant had a sack on defense and Darrell Matchem picked off a pass. Kevon’tey Fowler and Bryant each recorded eight tackles.

The Tritons make another long trip back to Kansas this coming Saturday to face Butler. The Grizzlies improved to 4-2 with a 77-14 victory over McDougle Tech.

Starting at $4.62/week.
