BUILDING BLOCKS

Piece by piece, the St. Edmond baseball team continues to build a foundation for success both the present and the future.

The Gaels erased any lingering thoughts from a tough doubleheader split on Monday by downing West Bend-Mallard here Tuesday night at Rogers Park, 17-6 in six innings.

Senior Grant Galles sent the St. Edmond (10-7 overall) faithful home happy with a inside-the-park grand slam to cap a seven-run sixth.

Galles finished the night 3-for-5 with five RBI, four runs scored and two steals, as classmates Kinnick Henning scored four times and Ethan Swisher three. Henning also had two hits, drew two walks and drove in a run.

“Those seniors have really been doing a great job of leading us,” SEHS head coach Jordan Miller said. “They have come up big in key situations, as have the underclassmen. It’s been a lot of fun to see.”

The Gaels scored in five of the six innings they came to the plate in, starting the night off with a pair of runs in the first. They took advantage of three walks by the Wolverines (3-9) and an error, as Henning and Galles both scored.

Blake Bartlett, who drove in two runs, reached 20 RBI on the year, becoming the first Gael to hit that number since John Nemmers in 2023.

Griffin Laufersweiler drove in two runs and scored out of the No. 7 spot in the batting order, as Coltin Fevold and Julian Blanco each added an RBI.

Fevold picked up the win on the mound, going four innings with three strikeouts. Thomas Ehn made his return to the field following a concussion, pitching the final two innings with a pair of strikeouts.

“Coltin really is developing out there for us,” Miller said. “We wanted to get Thomas out there for some action, so we kind of managed it to make that work. Those guys are going to be a big part of our future moving forward.”

For West Bend-Mallard, Grady Goddard and Wyatt Hanson each had two hits, as Goddard and Jayson Akridge both drove in two runs.

Galles has now recorded 81 hits and 57 runs in his Gael career while Henning has 45 hits and 45 runs scored.

This is the best 17-game start to a season for St. Edmond since the 2016 team also went 10-7, finishing as the last to win 20 games.

Up next for the Gaels will be a trip to Eagle Grove on Thursday, as the Wolverines play GTRA Wednesday night in Gilmore City.
