Dodgers cruise past Humboldt
HUMBOLDT — Tru McBride had one career home run in nearly 220 varsity at-bats heading into the 2026 baseball season.
That narrative has changed in a big way for the Fort Dodge junior this year.
McBride went deep again on Tuesday as the ninth-ranked (Class 4A) Dodgers defeated Humboldt on the road, 12-3.
The homer against the Wildcats — a three-run shot in the first inning — extended McBride’s long-ball streak to three consecutive games. The FDSH slugger now leads the state with nine, which is the most in the program since Alex Alstott hit 11 in 2011.
McBride’s five RBI last night also pushes his season total to 36, which currently ranks second among all prep players in Iowa.
“I spent a lot of time and hard work in the weight room this winter, and also spent a ton of time working on my swing with my coaches this offseason to try and become the best hitter I could be,” said McBride, who had homered just once in 74 varsity contests as an underclassman. “Mentally I’ve taken big steps since last year by being able to forget the negative and just move on to the next pitch every at-bat.”
McBride added a two-run double and scored three times. Fort Dodge (22-4 overall) plated five runs in the opening frame, then added seven insurance runs in the final two innings.
Junior Bo Marsh drove in three, with classmate Kolton Schiltz reaching base three times and scoring in every scenario. Juniors Will McElroy and Davis Underberg added two hits each for the Dodgers, who have won seven straight and 16 of 18 overall.
Junior Mason Frevert worked 5• effective innings on the mound, giving up two unearned runs and striking out six. Fort Dodge stole eight bases, with McElroy and Caiden Fraher swiping two each.
“I’m really proud of our team so far; all the time we spent in the offseason workouts are starting to pay off,” McBride said. “(Being 22-4) is great, but we still have so much left to prove as the season continues.”
Humboldt is now 12-6.
Fort Dodge hosts Ottumwa (12-7) on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
