An incoming storm delayed Senior Night for the Fort Dodge baseball team here Tuesday evening.

But even in five innings of work, the Dodgers were able to provide excitement for 12th-graders Triston Bockoven, Ethan Baade, Drake Callon, Jace Ulrich, Eli Elsbecker, Alex Underwood and Carson Peterson.

Fort Dodge posted a 7-3 victory over Marshalltown at Ed McNeil Field. Due to the threat of inclement weather, the second game of the doubleheader was canceled.

Ulrich went deep and drove in three runs, Callon had two hits and scored twice, and Elsbecker had a two-RBI single.

“It would have been nice to get both games in, but I’m happy with what I saw,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “We talk about process over outcome, and we competed consistently at the plate.”

After the Bobcats jumped on the Dodgers in the first with a run, Fort Dodge answered, plating three. Callon singled, Ulrich reached on an error and Elsbecker drove in both after Ulrich stole second.

On a grounder by Landen Hout, Elsbecker came across home after swiping second himself.

Freshman Royce Pederson pitched out of a jam in the second, going three with three strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

Fort Dodge made it 4-1 when Ulrich hit a double that scored Jase Nekvinda in the second before putting another three-spot on the board in the fourth.

Callon had a double that scored Nekvinda, and Ulrich cleared the bases with a two-run homer — the 11th of his career.

“Hitting a home run as well as the Dodgers getting the win was a special touch to Senior Night,” Ulrich said. “All in all, I have been blessed with such great teammates, coaches and parents making these last five years in the Dodger program a dream come true.”

Landen Grandors relieved Pederson in the fourth and pitched two innings, striking out one with two hits allowed.

Nekvinda finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while Corbin Cooper and Hout each had a hit. For Nekvinda and Cooper — a freshman and a sophomore, respectively — that marked their first varsity hits.

“It’s always nice to see guys get that first hit,” Utley said. “Corbin is coming back from an injury and I’m super proud of him for getting back out there. We put Jase into the lineup and he has great speed on the bases.”

The Dodgers have now won nine in a row against Marshalltown and are 36-12 in the last 48 meetings. They outscored the Bobcats 30-8 in three games this season, and have scored at least seven runs in each of the past nine.

Fort Dodge concludes its regular season on Wednesday when they host Des Moines Lincoln for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

“It’s tough when weather like this happens,” Utley said. “We’ll honor our seniors before the first game (Wednesday) because they deserve that.”
