NCC squads earn state bids

CLEAR LAKE — Humboldt, Webster City and Algona were in action here Thursday at a Class 3A state-qualifying track and field meet.

Gavin Weber led the Bulldogs, winning the three distance events. He secured gold medals in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, with teammate Ashton Moreno capturing the 400 and Macy Knapp the girls 800.

Algona also had first place finishes in the sprint medley and distance medley relays. William Weichert and Evan Allie ran on both, as Jack Limbaugh and Moreno completed the sprint medley.

Levi Walker and Weber ran the other two legs of the distance medley.

Max Nevitt in the discus and Allie in the 200 earned auto bids to state as runners-up.

The Wildcats pushed four events to state with second place finishes.

Mason Brown was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles with the 4×800, shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays all scoring silvers.

Jackson Dodd ran on all three relays, Elliot Carlson and Keegan Groat were in on two while Peyton Van Pelt, Mason Van Pelt, Coen Matson and Tyler Carlson all ran on one each.

Webster City’s top finishes came courtesy of Jaxon Cherry, as the senior won both the shot put and discus events, along with the 4×400 of Cloe Savitski, Adeline Tesdahl, Rosemary Chamness and Isabel Grossoehme.

The state meet begins next Thursday in Des Moines from Drake Stadium.

Along with first and second place district finishers qualifying for state, the Top-8 performances will earn at-large bids.
