SE girls earn four automatic bids

EARLHAM — Mariah Myers was a double-event winner once more and Josie Harvey joined her as an indivdual automatic state qualifier here Thursday for the St. Edmond girls track and field team.

Myers swept the discus and shot put during a Class 1A district meet, with Harvey placing first in the 100 hurdles. Winners from each event earned bids to the state meet, which begins next week in Des Moines.

The Gaels, who finished second overall in the team standings to Earlham by just four points, closed the night with a first place finish in the 4×400 relay from Ellie Knox, Hannah Landwehr, Sasha Hess and Anna Lursen, as the quartet went 4:15.04.

“I am so proud of all the girls,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “They all ran extremely well.

“With a few automatic qualifiers and several others with really good chances to make it to Drake Stadium next week, Friday should be an exciting day It’ll be a little nerve racking waiting for those to come out, but the girls can feel good about what they did.”

Myers secured her shot put crown with a throw of 37-11 while hitting a mark of 126-3 in the discus. Harvey, who raced to a runner-up in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.52, clocked a winning time of 16.40 in the 100 hurdles.

Lursen was second in the 800 in 2:24.06 while also running on both the runner-up 4×800 and distance medley relays. Ellie Knox, Hannah Landwehr and Michaela Leiting joined her on the 4×800 (10:10.90), with Faith Shirbroun, Brianna Saathoff and Sasha Hess completing the distance medley (4:28.31).

Leiting earned bronze in the 1,500 (5:15.34) while Shirbroun, Knox, Myrah Lemon and Saathoff were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:57.0.

“All of them continue to amaze me with their work ethic,” Tracy said. “They are such a great group of kids to be around.”

Landwehr placed fifth in both the 3,000 (11:31.47) and 800 (2:34.75), Andee Barwin was fifth in the 400 (1:11.61) and the sprint medley relay of Shirbroun, Harvey, Saathoff and Hess placed fifth (1:59.01).

Placing sixth for the Gaels were Lily Eslick in the 3,000 (12:53.36) and Alex Leiting in the 400 (1:12.20). Lemon was seventh in the long jump (14-10).
