Gaels have high hopes for relays

EARLHAM — The St. Edmond boys put together a strong performance here Thursday night at a Class 1A state track and field qualifier.

While the Gaels did not earn any automatic bids with top finishes, they had several marks that put them in consideration for at-large spots.

The winners of each event from each district around the state advance to Des Moines and Drake Stadium next week, with the Top-14 next best filling out the fields.

ACGC won the team title over Earlham, with Panorama third and St. Edmond placing fourth overall.

The distance medley relay of Grant Galles, Klay Baker, Aaron Hindt and Anthony Valles placed second with a time of 3:46.79.

“We have a strong chance in the 4×400, distance medley and 4×200 relays,” SEHS head coach Donn Larson said. “The sprint medley is up in the air and Anthony has a chance in the 3,200 and 1,600.

“It was a really good night for us in a rebuilding year. We only brought 15 guys and scored in 14 of the 16 events we competed in with plenty of PRs.”

In the 4×800, Jakob Koopman, Hunter Horn, Levi Odor-Westrum and Liam Shannon placed third in 9:12.36, while the 4×200 of JT Laufersweiler, Galles, Baker and Hindt also finished third (1:34.25).

Laufersweiler, Galles, Thomas Cosgrove and Hindt finished third in the 4×400 with a time of 3:32.83.

Valles raced to a fourth in the 3,200 in 10:22.54 and 1,600 (4:41.94), as did the sprint medley relay featuring Cosgrove, Galles, Hindt and Laufersweiler. They had a time of 1:39.36.

Horn was fifth in the high jump (5-6) and sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:00.62), Cosgrove fifth in the 100 (11.91) and Leo Ehn fifth in the discus (123-9). Odor-Westrum added a sixth in the 800 (2:13.60) and Shannon was seventh in the 3,200 (10:45.47).
