Bulldogs too much for Gael boys

HAMPTON — The St. Edmond boys couldn’t overcome a cold shooting night, falling to Hampton-Dumont/CAL here Friday night, 59-34.

Coming off a road loss to Clear Lake on Thursday, the Gaels were unable to get on track here.

The Bulldogs (6-6 overall, 2-6 in the North Central Conference) raced out to an early 8-0 lead and led by 10 at the half on the heels of a 20-9 run that started after St. Edmond went up 9-8.

For the Gaels, Noah Simpson scored 11, Sam Mericle and Hayden Mayer had eight, and Jackson Palmer added seven.

“They just outplayed us,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They made it tough on us on offense, not giving us any good looks, they were physical and they hustled. Plain and simply, they just outplayed us.”

Cal Herren scored 20 to lead the Bulldogs, while Marco Guerrero added 17.

In the third, it was all Hampton-Dumont/CAL, as they outscored the Gaels, 12-7. The Bulldogs opened the fourth by scoring the first eight points to build a 20-point cushion.

“They were coming off a big win over Iowa Falls-Alden and are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Kochendorfer said. “Give them credit for what they did.”

The win for Hampton-Dumont/CAL was the first over the Gaels since February 2015. St. Edmond has won 28 of the last 30 meetings between the two all-time.

St. Edmond (6-7, 1-5) returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Iowa Falls-Alden.
