Iowa Central splits on the tennis court

The Iowa Central men’s tennis team finished off the fall with a split this past weekend, falling to Midland before bouncing back with a win over Doane.

Midland, the defending Great Plains Athletic Conference champions, used the doubles point to claim a 4-3 dual victory.

For the Tritons, Eduardo Valenca and Nicholas Espinoza scored a 6-4 win in doubles at the No. 1 position. In singles, Theo Devals, Zamani Moyo and Arthur Praud each had wins.

“Theo had a big win in the third-set tiebreaker and Zamani pulled an upset at No. 1 singles,” Iowa Central head coach Eric Sturgis said. “Arthur also had a win at No. 3 singles.

“I was very proud of the fight of our team and effort in singles. This was a dogfight and matches in the spring will be just like this. I was proud of the way our team played against a very good NAIA program.”

The Tritons rebounded with a 4-3 victory over Doane to improve to 5-1.

Moyo and Devals, along with Praud and Nolan Laduree had wins in doubles to secure that point, while Moyo, Laduree and Devals each had singles wins.

“I was very happy with the way we rebounded,” Sturgis said. “That was a good win over a strong Doane team.”

Moyo put together an 8-2 record in singles with both Ladure and Devals going 9-2.
