St. Edmond escapes vs. Cowboys

Peyton Scott drove in fellow senior Grant Heldorfer for the game-winning run here on Wednesday night, giving the St. Edmond baseball team a much-needed 7-6 victory over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows at Rogers Park.

Scott connected on a pitch that reached the outfield, allowing Heldorfer to easily score.

Heldorfer was 3-for-3 with a walk, four runs scored and three steals out of the leadoff spot in the lineup, Scott had two hits and senior Cael Kolacia earned the win, striking out five in relief.

“After back-to-back one-run losses, it was good to get a win like this,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “Peyton has really improved at the plate. He’s taken that ‘senior-leap’ that you always want to see out of a player.

“We’ve got some guys that I feel very confident in at clutch situations. Peyton delivered, Cael came on the pitched great and Andrew (Elbert) bridged that gap from Hayden (Derrig) to Cael. He did a tremendous job for us in that role.”

Elbert struck out two and limited the damage that the Cowboys did in the fifth to keep the game within reach.

John Nemmers was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk, Landon Bartlett singled and scored, Tyler McDowell walked and scored, Derrig reached base and had three strikeouts on the mound and Devon Wirtz had a hit, an RBI and scored.

For Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Preston Gardner had two hits, drove in two runs and scored, Porter Chase reached base four times with a run and an RBI, and Kaleb King had a hit, two walks and scored a base.

St. Edmond struck first as Heldorfer singled in the opening inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. In the third, the Cowboys plated three runs to take the lead, adding one more in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

The Gaels did get on the board in the third as Heldorfer again singled, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nemmers.

In the bottom of the fifth, St. Edmond put up four to tie it at 6-all as Heldorfer, Wirtz, Bartlett and McDowell all scored.

“We are starting to put together hits and making things happen at the plate,” Szalat said. “I thought our defense made some key plays throughout the game that kept us in it.”

Next action for the Gaels will be Friday when they travel to Clear Lake. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows hosts Iowa Falls-Alden that same night.
