Humboldt moves to 12-1 in baseball

The Humboldt baseball team stretched their win streak to eight in a row with a 10-2 victory over St. Edmond here Monday night at Rogers Park.

Cade Witzke struck out nine, Caden Matson reached base four times and both Joshua Thurm and Christian Lee drove in three for the Wildcats (12-1 overall), who have scored at least 10 runs six times during their current run.

Witzke allowed just three hits over six innings while also collecting two hits and stealing three bases. Matson stole four bases and scored twice.

For the Gaels, Devon Wirtz and John Nemmers each drove in a run in the seventh as Andrew Elbert and Grant Heldorfer scored.

“I thought we showed some good things there late,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “We made some mistakes that we have to clean up if we want to compete in games like this.”

Humboldt went up 1-0 in the first before plating eight runs in the third as Thurm connected with a three-RBI double. Lee also had a two-RBI single before stealing second and third.

Witzke controlled the St. Edmond lineup, striking out six over the first three frames and eight through the fourth. He had multiple strikeouts in the first, second, third and fourth innings.

“That is as good a pitcher as we are going to see,” Szalat said. “We told the guys to be aggressive in an effort to try and jump on his first pitch. I thought we did that in a few innings, so it’s good to see that they are listening.”

Colby Clarken had a pair of doubles as all nine batters in the Humboldt lineup reached base as they host Webster City on Wednesday in a North Central Conference showdown.

Next up for the Gaels will be North Union here on Tuesday.
