Dodgers, Gaels, area athletes solidify spots

DES MOINES — All total, the Fort Dodge and St. Edmond boys and girls track and field teams will have 24 events entered into the state meet next week.

Final qualifiers were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union on Friday following state-qualifying meets Thursday night.

The Dodger boys secured the 4×100, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays, along with senior Tyler Schreier in the 100, junior Jon Astor in the discus and senior Sawyer Springer in the shot put.

On the girls side, junior Aleaha Pommer will run the 200 and Fort Dodge will have a 4×100 relay.

For the Gaels, senior Kase Baker runs the 200 along with the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and sprint medley relays, while the SEHS girls saw five different individuals earn bids.

Senior Aubrey Bemrich is in the 800 and 1,500, freshman Andee Barwin the 400, junior Caroline Shelly the 800, freshman Michaela Leiting the 1,500 and junior Emma Alstott the 400 hurdles. The Gael girls also qualified in the 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and distance medley relays.

A handful of area athletes will be in for busy days inside Drake Stadium including Southeast Valley’s Kiersten Fisher. The future University of Iowa Hawkeye is entered in the 100, 100 hurdles, high jump and long jump.

Cole Corey from South Central Calhoun qualified in the 400 hurdles, long jump and high jump.

Humboldt’s Quinton Orr, Webster City’s J.J. Moore, Pocahontas Area’s Trey Oehlertz, Southeast Valley’s Cooper Nuss and Sam Hanson, Eagle Grove’s Blake Morgan and Greene County’s Jackson Morton are in two events.

For the girls, Humboldt’s Lily Groat and Kendal Clark, Algona’s Moriah Knapp, Manson Northwest Webster’s Maddie Moline and Paige Condon, Matea Conlon and Morgan Middleton from Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Brooke Jergens of East Sac County, Brooklynn Olson of Greene County, Bishop Garrigan’s Molly Joyce and Audi Crooks, West Bend-Mallard’s Rachel Fehr and Danielle Hoyle of Paton-Churdan have advanced in two events each.

Seven events feature the top marks from the area including North Union’s Sam Nielsen (high jump), Fehr (400), Joyce (long jump), Crooks (shot put), Conlon (100), the Garrigan girls shuttle hurdle and the Greene County boys shuttle hurdle.
