Dodgers dominate at Heelan

Pair of shutout wins for No. 1 FDSH softball squad

SIOUX CITY — Top-ranked (Class 5A) Fort Dodge capped a frenetic week with a pair of resounding victories at the Sioux City Heelan Invitational here on Saturday.

Playing their sixth and seventh games in six days, the Dodgers (5-2 overall) made quick work of host Heelan and Le Mars in a pair of shortened contests. Head coach Andi Adams’ squad shut out the Crusaders, 6-0 in six innings, then blanked the Bulldogs, 12-0 in five.

“We had a lot of players step up at different times, and that’s going to be when we’re at our best,” Adams said. “We have capable hitters and (athletes) who are able to contribute in so many ways.

“It was great to get a lot of kids into the games, and still work on the moving parts both on the field and in our lineup.”

Junior Jalen Adams and eighth-grader Lucy Porter were untouchable from the pitcher’s circle. Adams struck out 15 in six innings of work against Heelan, scattering three hits.

Porter, making her varsity debut, also fired a three-hit shutout.

“It didn’t seem like Jalen had 15 strikeouts, but after (43 Ks for the week), it just kind of becomes second nature to expect it — even though we shouldn’t take it for granted,” Coach Adams said. “And Lucy did well. She was very poised. All business. She’s a competitor out there. It was great to give her a chance and watch her build some confidence.”

Senior Chloe Wertz drove in a pair versus Heelan. Senior Sophia Klinger and juniors Tory Bennett and Maia Davis added two hits each.

Davis also scored twice.

“It’s great to see Maiah really catching fire,” Adams said. “She’s so dangerous on the bases, so we want her on as much as possible. It was only a matter of time before Maia, Tory and Chloe got going.”

Junior Martyne Lowrey was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI against Le Mars. Adams was 2-for-4 with two runs and two driven in.

Senior Tristin Doster homered and drove in a pair. Bennett was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Eighth-grader Mariah Myers added two more RBI to her total, giving her a 5A-best 13 for the first week.

“We’re just focused on making sure everyone gets better and maximizes their potential before all is said and done,” Adams said. “When we’re clicking and coming at (an opponent) from any and all directions, we can be really tough to beat.”

The Dodgers return to action at No. 11 Ankeny Centennial on Tuesday. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
