FD 4×1 second at Duncan Relays

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge boys track team participated in a handful of events at the venerable Jim Duncan Relays on Saturday.

In a precursor of sorts to both the upcoming Drake Relays and the state track meet at Drake Stadium, the Dodgers brought home a silver medal in the 4×100 relay. Senior Tyler Schreier was third in the long jump, and classmate Sawyer Springer took fourth in the shot put.

“It was a great challenge,” FDSH head coach John McBride said. “We had an up-and-down day. We could have performed better in spots, but I also think it’s a confidence builder when you’re measuring up against many of the best teams in the state and you realize you’re right there.”

The 4×1 quartet of Christian Davidson, Jake Erickson, Sam Daniel and Tyler Schreier clocked a 43.71, finishing behind only West Des Moines Valley (43.43).

“We were hoping to be a little quicker there, but it still went well,” McBride said. “We’re still sitting in ninth for both the 4×1 and 4×2 (for Drake), so we’re in good shape.”

Schreier had a 19-11 in the long jump. He was edged by Marshalltown’s Malachi Holmes (19-11.75) for second. Waukee’s Aiden McGee (20-6.75) was the winner.

Springer’s 44-8.5 in the shot put sat behind only Braden Edwards of West Des Moines Valley (51-2.25), Matt Kapuskta of Waukee (49-3.5) and Ankeny’s Justice Miller (47-6.25).

Junior Jon Astor was sixth in the discus (128-5).

“It was raining and just kind of a mess for the field events, so the results weren’t all that great for anyone,” McBride said. “But again, we were facing some of the best competition we’ve seen yet, so we took a step forward.”

Fort Dodge hosts the Dodger Relays on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
