Erickson medals for Tritons

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Austin Erickson was crowned medalist and the Iowa Central men picked up the team title at the Graceland Spring Invitational here Saturday.

Erickson carded a final round 74 to go along with his opening round 72, giving him a two-stroke victory over Spencer Tucker of William Penn.

Justin Schipper tied for seventh for the Tritons with a 153 while Joe Forsting and Tomas Ribeiro were ninth with matching 154s. Kyle Wille tied for 18th with a two-day total of 161.

As a collective unit, Iowa Central fired a 606 with scores of 304 and 302. They finished six strokes ahead of Metropolitan with Waldorf, William Penn, Graceland and Southwestern rounding out the field.

“I was pretty happy with how we played (Saturday),” Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. “We had in our minds from the start that we were going to find a way to win and the men did just that. It was fun to see them believe in each other and know they were going to get it done.

“Austin had a great fall for us and it was just a matter of time before he broke through at the college level.”

On the women’s side, Kelly Boleyn tied for third with a two-day total of 179. She cut seven strokes off her score from the first round, firing an 86 on Saturday.

“Kelly played really well (Saturday) and deserved her Top-3 finish,” Graewin said. “She’s starting to believe more and more in herself and it’s really fun to see her confidence growing.”

Iowa Central is set to return on Monday, April 5 at the DMACC Spring Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
