ST. PAUL, Minn. — The final chapter of Johnny Bice’s football career has been written.

The story of his impact on the real world is just beginning.

Bice, a Fort Dodge native and Macalester College senior, was recently inducted into the 2020 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society for his academic and athletic excellence. The former Dodger quarterback, a neuroscience major, completed his final campaign on the field for the Scots this past fall, throwing for 671 yards and four touchdowns while serving as the program’s co-captain.

“Macalester has gifted me with so many new opportunities to grow as a teammate, student and person,” said Bice, a 2016 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate. “The culture around Mac and the Twin Cities is one I am proud to be a part of.

“I have become more understanding of the perception that athletes have on collegiate campuses, and this perception allows us as student-athletes to try to shift our image to a more positive light here at Mac. The football team embodies the characteristics I want to possess as an individual: caring, involved and respected.”

Bice, the son of Fort Dodge’s Jim and Donna Bice, has already been a Dean’s List honoree at Macalester four times. Currently carrying a cumulative grade point average of 3.52, Bice took his dental acceptance test this spring and will be applying to dental schools in the summer, with a plan to start in the fall of 2021.

Bice will spend the next year working at a dental clinic in St. Paul. He has also interned at the Brain Injury Research Lab at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

“Macalester has allowed me to meet and become great friends with people from across the globe,” Bice said. “I have been immersed in cultures and beliefs that have challenged me, helped me grow, and provided me with new ways of thinking that I will take with me in my next chapter in life.”

Bice’s brother, Nick, will attend Macalester as well and join the football team beginning this fall. Nick was a senior receiver for the Dodgers in 2019.

While at FDSH, Bice was an academic all-state selection with a 3.93 GPA. He graduated third on the program’s all-time passing charts (2,913 yards) and was second in career touchdowns (30), as the Dodgers won 13 games in 20 tries with Bice under center.

Bice also lettered in basketball, track and baseball.

Requirements for membership into the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include being a starter or significant contributor in one’s last year of eligibility, achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
