DES MOINES — Another state wrestling medal will be coming to the Abbas family home courtesy of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows junior Reed Abbas.

The two-time state qualifier scored a technical fall in the seventh place match at 145 pounds here Saturday in Class 1A, adding his prize to those won by his brother, current Grand View University standout Tanner Abbas.

Abbas finished the year 42-11 overall, cementing his place on the podium with a 21-6 victory over Mount Ayr’s Jaydon Knight. He reached the quarterfinals, going 5-2 overall inside Wells Fargo Arena thanks to two wins during state duals.

“It feels good, but I’m not satisfied with seventh place,” Abbas said. “It is nice bringing home a medal to add to our accomplishments, but there is definitely more room for more medals.”

Abbas finished the week with 40 match points scored, recording both a fall and his technical fall. He is 113-32 in his career with two North Central Conference titles and an eighth place finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational to his resume.

“I had higher expectations for myself,” Abbas said. “I learned that you just need to be ready to wrestle 100 percent of the time. I lacked that in a couple of my matches and it ended up costing me better placement.

“I am very motivated. (Placing) seventh adds more fuel to the fire for this offseason and next year.”

In all, the NCC scored five state medals, with Abbas’ teammate, Tyler Stein, finishing his career eighth at 113 pounds.

Stein suffered a 6-1 decision loss to Joe Ebaugh of Denver in his final match, going 30-16 this year for a third consecutive 30-win season. He recorded 105 victories since his sophomore year, reaching state all three times.

Algona’s Andrew Hamilton and Cole Lewis each reached the podium, with Hamilton placing sixth at 220 pounds and Lewis eighth at 195 in 2A.

Hamilton dropped another close decision, this time to Crestwood’s Treyton Burnikel, 2-0. The senior went 3-3 at state, with the three losses coming by a total of six points, to conclude the year 40-4.

Lewis suffered a 7-6 setback to Solon’s Gage Marty, ending the season 35-11 overall. He will head to Grand View University to join the football team in the fall having also secured all-state honors twice on the gridiron.

Humboldt’s Cole Nelson earned third in his final state appearance, receiving a medical forfeit over Derrick Bass of Davenport Assumption in the bronze bout in 2A at 106 pounds.

Nelson went 36-7 this season, scoring four consecutive wins on the consolation side after a loss to Webster City’s Camron Phetxoumphone. In all, he had eight state wins this past week factoring in state duals scoring 32 match points with two falls at traditional state.
