County Golf Countdown: teenagers have title track record

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla Delaney Conrad, a Southeast Valley junior, putts during last year’s Webster County golf championship.

Then-Southeast Valley High School sophomore Delaney Conrad’s 2018 win in the Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota Webster County golf tournament may seem unusual given her age, but precocious contenders are nothing new to the winner’s circle in this event.

A number of teenagers — still competing for their respective high schools at the time — have left an indelible mark on the competition through the years.

Monte Huss had just finished his junior year at FDSH when he took the men’s open division title in 1992. Dodger sophomore-to-be Matt McIntyre did the same in 1995. And although Tanner Kesterson never did take home a title, the Texas teen was a formidable foe when Kevin Ault and Colin Pearson were finishing double-digits under par from 2008-12.

Stacey Bergman’s reign on the women’s side began in the summer of 1993, when she had just completed her freshman year at FDSH. Bergman didn’t let go of the crown until she had moved on to live in Knoxville and play for the University of Tennessee.

Stef Nelson had just wrapped up her Dodger career when her run began in 2003, and Kelsey Faiferlick experienced the same two months after her graduation from St. Edmond in 2011.

On-line registration for the July 13 and 14 tournament, sponsored by The Messenger, is set up for all tournament participants this year at https://fdcc

The men’s open and senior division fields are asked to visit Lakeside (515-576-6741) with questions, concerns or if help is needed signing up. The women should go to the Country Club (955-8551).

All Webster County residents and workers are eligible to participate in the event, which has attracted nearly 8,000 golfers since The Messenger obtained sponsorship in 1980.
