Gaels roll to 12-0 win over North Union

It might not have been senior night, but the recent St. Edmond softball graduates played like it was here Thursday at Rogers Park.

Erin Flattery belted a home run, Abby Landwehr had a hit in her first varsity at-bat, and the five Gael seniors combined for eight hits, eight RBI and five runs in a 12-0 victory over North Union in four innings.

Flattery finished off a two-game cycle, as she went 4-for-4 Wednesday with two singles, a double and a triple in a win over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows. In her first appearance Thursday, she connected on a 3-1 pitch over the fence in center that had plenty of room to spare.

An inning later, Flattery added a two-RBI double, leaving her with six consecutive hits in six at-bats over two games.

St. Edmond improved its record to 11-10 overall.

“I’ve always said that we go as Erin goes and that was the case again,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “She came out stinging the ball and that just relaxed everyone.”

Macey Mason, another member of the senior class, was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, with Jacque Oberg finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Devyn Scott scored and reached on a walk and Landwehr, who returned to the program this year, had a game-ending two-RBI single in the fourth.

“What an awesome moment for Abby,” Clark said. “She has really improved as the season has gone on and I’m so proud of her for sticking with it.”

Along with picking up her 11th win of the season inside the circle, Ella Vratny was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Cambrie McBride scored three times, Jocy Timmerman had two hits, and Kacey Kruthoff had two hits and drove in a run.

“Ella threw strikes and had another great night at the plate,” Clark said. “Cambrie came in and was awesome on the bases. Everyone did their jobs and knows their role right now.

“We were aggressive and attacking, and when we do those two things, we are very dangerous.”

In the second, St. Edmond batted around, scoring nine runs on 10 hits with doubles from Flattery, Mason and Vratny.

Gracie Harvey kept her hot bat going out of the No. 9 hole, collecting hits in her two appearances with a run and an RBI. Rylee Kinney also had a base hit and Josephine Perry scored.

Timmerman extended her hit streak to 10 games, Kinney pushed her streak to nine with Flattery and Oberg now sitting at seven games with a hit.

For the Warriors (12-15), Hope Steinberger was 2-for-2, as the junior has now hit safely in her last 11 games.

The Gaels return to action Friday night at Hampton-Dumont.
