72nd FD Am next on the tee

Messenger photo by Eric Pratt Ron Peterson watches a drive during last year’s final round of the Fort Dodge Amateur at the FDCC. Peterson, an Urbandale resident, was the 2018 senior division champion after winning a playoff.

Defending super senior champion and local attorney Dave Sergeant is among the nearly 100 competitors signed up for this weekend’s 72nd Fort Dodge Amateur men’s golf tournament at the Country Club, which is scheduled to tee off at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Ron Peterson — the 2018 senior winner — is also in the field, as well as a number of other former FD Am and city tourney titleists.

Fort Dodge Senior High graduate Kevin Ault and Joe Urbanek are among the former open division champs in the field, as well as defending city gold medalist Ryan Reeder and ex-city kings Eddie Doyle, Ryan Kinseth and Austin Morrow. Four-time Travis Habhab Lakeside Am victor Andrew Huseman is expected to be in contention as well.

Huseman, Kinseth, Ault, Charlie West and Jeff Peterson — the Top-5 from the Lakeside Am earlier this month — are all on the FD Am tee sheet, along with Webster City’s Avery Fuhs (6th), Doyle (7th) and Morrow (8th).

Morrow, an FDSH graduate, also took the George Lee Memorial Tournament in Humboldt on June 8.

On the senior side, former winners Tom Schill of Gowrie and Joe Bates will be in action, alongside multi-time city champ Terry Miller and defending city senior victor Randy Stults. Joel Yunek, a Lake City High School graduate and four-time FD Am senior champ, will play as well.

Sergeant carded a 70-71-79–220 for the inaugural “super senior” crown last June. Peterson fired a 72-69-75–216 to secure the regular senior title.

The 18-hole rounds on Friday and Saturday will set up Sunday’s competition. Forty percent of each field advances to the 18-hole final-round action.

It could be an active three-day stretch weather-wise, with a strong chance of hit-and-miss thunderstorms on Friday with muggy conditions and highs in the mid-70s.

The Country Club is a par 35-36–71 layout.
