Johnson wins again for Tritons

Southeast Valley graduate Nolan Johnson earned another victory as the Iowa Central baseball squad defeated Indian Hills at Ed Barbour Field on Tuesday, 6-2.

Johnson (2-0) worked six innings, scattering five hits and striking out a pair. The freshman surrendered only two earned runs for the Tritons, who improved to 26-16 overall and 12-1 at home.

“Nolan did a really nice job for us again,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “He kept things in check for us until our offense finally came around (in the fourth inning).”

Zach Shadlow relieved Johnson and earned a three-inning save. He allowed only a single hit.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Tritons plated three runs. Iowa Central finished the contest with three home runs: by Devin Porter, Cullen Weiss and Albert Mora.

“Our homers accounted for all but two of our runs,” Stein said. “Devin kind of got us going offensively with his solo shot and we went from there.”

Iowa Central tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth.

Indian Hills is now 19-21.

Porter and Nathin Mortimer had two hits each for Iowa Central, which returns to action on Saturday against NIACC in Mason City.
